We are about finishing the project. Last week. Since the last time I wrote time has gone so fast just because, as I told on my last blog appearance, we were watching the light at the end of the tunnel and we were like pushing out to reach it. At this time, when I stand for a minute and I start to sum up what we have done among the past few months, I realize that we have do a lot of things; tonnes of information has been recorded and a lot of people have been involved in such a huge project.

Adrian and a soak-away

As far as I am concerned, I can be proud of myself about the well-done work: I started in my first day with a soak-away (which has become Gary’s business with the passing of time!) and then, pits of different shapes, fills and refills, then appeared the first skelly, and another after that, and cremations, context sheets, samples taken up and down the ladder, finds, getting too hot from the sun and then getting wet in rainy days (just a few fortunately), different hypothesis and points of view….and a lot of mistakes also amongst all that.

Adrian excavating a skeleton

That entire job makes me proud and happy because it means more than a few months working. It means my development as a professional archaeologist, meeting and learning from other colleagues, and lovers of archaeology getting it wrong and learning from every piece of sand you knock out and all the small pieces you find. Just because of that, I am getting sad and happy at this time. The project that it gave a lot of things is about to finish. But there is no time to sit down and show off about what we have done, because there is so much work to do after the site job and there will be other sites and other stories to find out…
