Adrian and Ceri removing the horn cores from context [1587]

Here we are, almost September and the last weeks of the excavation are coming up. We are in a bit of a hurry to finish everything, which is a pity, because the last area we have to dig out it is where there are more burials in better conservation than those we have found before. Or at least it is what it seems to be, if we have a look in the past week when we have found skeletons in very good shape! For the moment I have been working in a horn-core soak-away with Liz and Ceri. We were trying to get as many horns as possible for sampling, but it was almost impossible to get them out without breaking them, as they were very fragile, so we just excavated it and recorded as much as we could.

Adrian & Anies look for a grave cut

As I said, we are in a bit hurry and I had to dig out a skeleton very fast, because the machine was coming in. As a result, I couldn’t enjoy it as I would have liked but still, that is what commercial archaeology is, and besides, I am a professional (I guess so!) and however, it is exciting anyway. Now I am working in a place where there are some graves, and just taking some spread soil out to find out what is coming up nearby. If I am lucky, maybe I will find a cremation in pottery or a burial… who knows. Now I have to go to keep working..(“speed up!!!”)
