Sites and Monuments Record – more often refered to now as the Historic Environment Record. Every county and unitary authority maintain a record of historic buildings, monuments, find spots, archaeological sites and landscapes, available on request on paper or increasing on line. These records list the location, period and type of site, and are most commonly used by archaeologists and planning authorities when investigating areas of development.
