A columbarium is a place of storage for cremated remains, and during the Roman period these were constructed with small niches in the internal walls for cinerary urns. The term is derived from the Latin columba (“dove,” or “pigeon”), and it originally referred to a dovecote. It later acquired its more common meaning by association.
