Group Description

    • A series of Post Medieval features had truncated these burials, and all the burials in this group were lain in the gravels of the site area, so the conditions were not conducive to good preservation. Accordingly for burial subgroup 3, only the left and right femur remained as a result of these post depositional processes. Burial subgroup 5, sampled as <40>, held inclusions of iron nails, suggesting interment within a coffin, and again the interred skeleton was not well preserved, with only the right radius and ulna, and both femurs surviving. Cut by north - south Post Medieval linear [572] burial subgroup 6, sampled as <5>, was heavily truncated, and the burial had only survived in one half of the divided grave due to the truncation and poor preservation. Post Medieval linear [572] also cut burial subgroup 7, in which the skeleton was very badly preserved and consisted of one fragment of long bone. These graves were all within area 1 of the site excavation. These burials were all noted for their shallow nature and location within this heavily truncated area of the site.

Dating Information

    • No dating material was recovered from these features, but given their relative position in the stratigraphic sequence and function within the context of the site, they are clearly Roman.
