  • Soft and sticky
  • Dark grey and light brown
  • On top-clayish sand; closer to bottom more small pebbles in the fill
  • Small flecks of charcoal, occasionally
  • width: 1m, length: c.1.35m, thickness: c.0.45m
  • (858)[859] is located just north of another pit [846]. Roman pottery was found in the fill. Has been truncated by modern drain activity; sketch/levels overleaf
  • Excavated in dry conditions with mattock and trowel
