Basic Information

  • Quarry pit cut

Sub Groups

  • Sub Group: PCO06_692
    • Cut of quarry pit

Group Description

    • Compacted gravel layer (814) was stratigraphically overlay (885), the surviving fill of quarry pit [890] (subgroup 692 - group 360). The fill afforded very good preservation as shown by the survival of leather and cloth within the deposit, indicating that it was a later back fill deposit, used to level off the area of land affected by the excavation of [890]. The size and steepness of cut [890] was demonstrated that it was dug for quarrying, and probably on an industrial scale. In this it is comparable to Early Post Medieval quarry pit cut [639]. Cut [890] was dug (632) and (881), deposits resulting from earlier quarrying activities.
