A votive offering is an object placed in a grave or in a sacred place to gain favour with supernatural forces, or in Christianity, to encourage saints to intercede with God or as a sign of devotion.

Votive offerings have been made throughout all periods of history, and the practise continues in modern life, with the offering of candles in front of Orthodox icons, for example, or the tossing of coins in wishing wells.
