A fill is an archaeological context that has been deposited into or has built up in a cut feature such as a pit or a ditch – so, for example, a fill could be a type of waste thrown into a rubbish pit, or the contents of a grave cut, or the soil thrown back on top of a cess pit. It can also be the silt that builds up naturally in an open feature, such as a pit that is open to the elements for a period of time.
