Subgroup Narrative Text

    • Underlying the modern overburden, (668) was the latest backfill of soak-away {666}. Under (668) was (669), a probable in wash deposit, and this overlay (670), a mix of silts. This overlay {736}, a layer of bricks lain over the primary fill (737) of soak-away {666}. Context {736} was lain within {666} to act as feature to aid the drainage of water from the soak-away without the hindrance of silt, deliberately lain respective of the structure of {666} but obviously not as an original part of the structure. Therefore showing it to have different periods of use. Drain {700} was also a later edition that fed into soak-away {666}.

Dating Narrative

    • A total of 5 pot sherds were recovered from these fills. The earliest fill in the sequence of this subgroup was (670) which produced two pot sherds both dated to 1840-1900, giving a date for this phase of use for the feature. The latest deposit, (668), produced two pot sherds dated to 1730-1780AD, while middle deposit (669) produced one sherd dated to 1480-1650; these earlier dates are seen as residual.
