Group Description

    • This group consisted of a series of inter-cutting pits that were dug to take refuse deposits, and seemingly refuse from the cemetery site area. Layer (1403) overlay (1285), the fill of pit cut [1300]. The pit also contained cremation urn (1298) and human skull (1299), which were dumped rather than placed. So the pit was seemingly dug to take the redeposited burial items, and (1285) functioned as a capping layer. Pit cut [1300] was dug into (1381), the upper fill in large pit [1383], which also contained primary fill (1382). Later fill (1381) was seen as a capping layer in the pit, with (1382) forming a mixed refuse deposit that the pit was seemingly dug to receive. Cut [1383] was dug into (1422), the fill of [1421]. Cut [1421], was dug into (1424), the fill of [1425], that was dug into (1521), the secondary fill of [1523], that also held primary fill (1522). The mixed nature of fill (1424) indicate that this was a refuse pit. Cut [1476] was dug into mixed deposit (1495), the fill of pit cut [1496]. This pit was concave, slightly stepped, and was dug into which was cut into dumped deposit (1515), a pit fill of pit [1516], and (1526), a deposit containing redeposited cremation fragments. Pit cut [1496] was cut into dumped deposit (1515), a pit fill of pit [1516], a possible refuse pit, which was dug into the natural gravels of the site area.
