Horn core pit

Horn cores were often used in this area of East London during the post-medieval period as a cheaper alternative to bricks. They are often found in areas known for small-scale industry, such as ivory-working, tanning, bell founding and glass making. The cores are used to form the structure of the pit. These pits are sometimes used as soak-aways or in the tanning industry.
