Stratigraphic Matrix

Description

  • Soft
  • Dark brown with lens of yellow
  • Clayish silt with lens of sand
  • Freq. animal bone, occasional pottery, med CBM, v.occ metal (slag and nails)
  • thickness: 1-10cm, depth: 150-181cm
  • The fill was thicker at the top of the cut than at the bottom-this is probably because the base of the soakaway was cut into natural sand so the construction fill was not necessariy as the sand would collapse into the space between the cut and the masonry.
  • trowelled/spade-dry
