Group Description
-
- This group records a cluster of cremation burials. Cut [982] was dug into (1099), a small dumped deposit, possibly derived from a disturbed cremation deposit, sampled as <49>. However, the bone within this deposit were heavily fragmented. This deposit was dumped over (964), the fill of [963]. Context (967) sealed (981) a possible cremation fill in cut [982], which was a fairly diffuse cut containing a fill with charcoal, burnt bone, and pottery, a few nails. It is also located within an area with two cremation urns and a lot of burnt bone. [982] was dug into (1099), a disturbed cremation deposit, sampled as <49>. Underlying Medieval agricultural soils (979) was (1048) the fill of cut [1050], which was dug for cremation urn (1049). This cut was very diffuse, and was dug into (1117), fill of cut [1118], another cremation in this group, which contained similar pieces of pottery to urn from cremation cut [1050] located immediately above. The fill contained cremated bone and pot, and [1118] was dug into (1090), the fill of the Roman cremation [1091], which had no urn, just a concentration of burnt bone within the cut, which was sampled as <46>. Truncated by modern activity, cremation urn 1051, was filled by (1053), the fill of truncated cremation 1052.
