Services for Sustainable Development

The pressure is currently on developers to design projects which demonstrate a commitment to sustainability. Archaeology and the historic environment can have a role to play in this. In particular, there is an current emphasis on using cultural heritage to help build communities that have a true sense of cohesion and belonging.

A few large projects are using these concepts of working with the historic environment to make their developments more attractive, profitable and sustainable. L – P : Archaeology has worked with a number of these clients and is an expert in this field. For example, we are currently working with The Princes Foundation, who continually demonstrate their commitment to ‘building places for people’ by incorporating the existing built heritage with their designs.

In practical terms, the advice offered to a client would include some traditional strands of archaeological consultancy such as an analysis of the general history and archaeology of an area. However our unique specialist approach enables us to provide advice regarding integrating elements of the historic landscape into new developments, the use of historic buildings for focal points, and the encouragement of community engagement with excavations and displays as well as low level design input.

As more and more emphasis is put on sustainability, this kind of integrated and sustainable approach gives clients competitive advantage. This is especially true of large-scale and contentious developments where planning decisions and public enquiries may be in favour of the more sustainable, better-designed scheme.
