Whippingham, Isle of Wight

Barratt Southampton have recently completed the Masterplan and Environmental Statement for a large-scale residential development near Whippingham, IoW.
L – P : Archaeology were contracted to provide advice during all stages of the preparation of the Masterplan and the Environmental Statement. As a result of our desk-based assessment and discussions with the Local Authority it was deemed that a programme of field evaluation would be necessary to fully ascertain the level of archaeology present on the site.
By initially undertaking a non-intrusive fieldwalking and geophysical survey over the large site area we were able to dramatically reduce the amount of evaluation trenching that was required. This substantially reduced the clients archaeological budget.
From the results of the targeted trenching we were able to successfully negotiate with the Local Authority that no further archaeological work would be necessary during any part of the development programme.
