L – P : Archaeology were contracted by the John Lewis Partnership to project manage the archaeology and historic building requirements for a 2.8 hectare retail development off Alma Road in Romsey. As well as the building of a Waitrose food store and car parking for the supermarket and other retail units, an existing Royal British Legion building was relocated.
An initial desk based assessment of the development area was undertaken to identify any potential archaeological issues on the site.
Responding to the findings of the DBA, and working closely with the client and engineers on site, an overarching strategy was devised in line with the requirements of national legislation and local council policy guidelines.
In liaison with the Test Valley Borough Council Archaeologist key points where the archaeological deposits may be damaged by the footprint of the new buildings were identified. This focus on the necessary archaeological works, and advance consideration of the treatment of artefacts and features that were likely to be found during the development, enabled an efficient scheme of investigation.
Throughout all phases of the development project L – P managed archaeological sub contractors and oversaw a series of evaluations and excavations, which revealed important archaeology of local significance.
