Verulamium Park

May 28, 2008 by Stuart Eve

St. Albans District Council were applying for Heritage Lottery Funding to improve all aspects of Verulamium Park in St. Albans, Hertfordshire. L – P : Archaeology were commissioned as the Archaeological and Heritage sub-consultants to The Landscape Partnership who brought together a team of specialists to prepare a Conservation Management Plan for the park.

Verulamium was the third largest Roman town in Britain and is one of the best preserved examples of Roman archaeology in the country. Designated as a Scheduled Monument by English Heritage, the extensive archaeological remains are mainly buried under 100 acres of parkland and recreational facilities; parts of the ancient city that are exposed – a length of city wall, a mosaic and hypocaust system – are already visitor attractions within the Park.

L – P’s role was to provide advice at all stages to aid in the submission of the funding application. This included background archaeological and historical research and liaising with English Heritage. A geophysical survey and LIDAR survey of the archaeological remains was undertaken and L – P’s in-house remote-sensing specialists used this data to map the heritage assets of the site.

L – P consultants wrote a baseline study, summarising the archaeological potential of the site, and produced a detailed statement of significance and a heritage impact statement.

With expert knowledge of heritage management and the uses of cultural heritage in sustainable development, L – P : Archaeology were also invited to contribute ways in which the heritage aspects of the Park could be enhanced and used to improve future visitor experience to this internationally important Roman town.

The Conservation Management Plan was completed in March 2008 and submitted to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
