Union Street

A vehicle repair garage in Chester was redeveloped as a block of 53 retirement apartments. Due to the location of the site within the city of Chester and its alignment with a known early Roman defensive ditch, a series of archaeological works were required.

L – P : Archaeology initially carried out a watching brief on the concrete slab removal. This was followed by series of 3 evaluation trenches. These trenches revealed a Post Medieval tanning pit along with the early Roman ditch.

As a result of this evaulation a targeted excavation was carried out within the area of the Roman ditch. Once excavated down to the maximum depth of the impact of the development a geo-textile mat was installed to preserve the underlaying archaeological deposits in situ and avoid the need for further excavation.

L – P was involved with this project from the initial ground investigation process to the completion of the groundworks. L – P liased with the client and the local authority to ensure that the archaeology was both protected and recorded, as well as ensuring that the development project was not impeded by the works that were undertaken.
