Nantwich Town Football Club are relocating to Kingsley Fields, a greenfield site on the outskirts of the town. Included in the £3.75 million project is a Football League stadium, Community Football Complex, pavilion, new access road, car park and 3 pitches including a state-of-the-art 3rd Generation all-weather pitch.
The Local Authority deemed this greenfield site to be in an area of high archaeological activity, due to its proximity to the Medieval town of Nantwich and a previous Roman settlement and salt-making area.
L – P : Archaeology carried out a Watching Brief and oversaw a metal detection survey by Crewe and Nantwich Metal Detecting Society. The artefacts identified by the survey, including Roman coins and lead-working waste, Civil War musket balls, modern buttons and machine parts, were also reported to the Cheshire Finds Liaison Officer of the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
During the topsoil strip of the site each artefact was located via GPS. The coordinates were then used within a Geographical Information System (GIS) to enable a systematic approach to analysing the find scatters. The evidence showed a continuous use of the area from the Roman period onwards.
L – P : Archaeology’s inclusive approach to the collection of archaeological data for this project enabled efficient reporting to the client and the County Archaeologist. A short history of Kingsley Fields, with details of some of the archaeological artefacts, is featured on the club’s website. Planning conditions for the site were met and no further archaeological works needed to take place.
