Harlow North Urban Expansion
Jul 07, 2006 by Janine Young
‘Harlow North is a plan for an urban extension to Harlow which would be one of the most advanced environmentally sustainable developments in Europe. It is planned as a real alternative to souless destructive sprawl, creating a new network of mixed use neighbourhoods’
L – P : Archaeology has been involved with the masterplanning team from the outset of the project. We have provided advice to the urban designers, including participating in a week long Enquiry by Design process from which the concept of the development stems.
Over a two year period L – P : Archaeology has carried out a wide range of studies on the site including built heritage studies, an historic landscape assessment, archaeological desk top studies, followed by an archaeological field evaluation.
Results have been compiled into an overall sensitivity model, to be used in the creation of an Environmental statement.
Our involvement in the project means the masterplan for the development has been conceived with a thorough understanding of the Historic Environment from the outset, and the current designs show a development which does not suppress the Historic Environment but rather draws inspiration from it whilst conserving and enhancing all historic assets present on site.
