Harlow North Sensitivity Model
Aug 03, 2006 by Janine Young
L – P : Archaeology has been involved in this project since the early planning stages through the creation of an historic landscape characterisation sensitivity model. Furthermore, L – P functions as a data-brokerage for collecting project information from individual consultants and making it readily available to all members of the project team.
Historic Landscape Sensitivity Model
Using the latest in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, a sensitivity model was created integrating the various aspects of historic landscape characterisation. Data was collected from two cropmark surveys, the local HER, previous historic landscape characterisations, and historic maps. Aerial photographs and high-resolution LIDAR data was used to ensure the inclusion of detailed topographic features.
Examining the above data in a series of overlapping layers, the combined sensitivity of the landscape to various types of development was determined. The historic landscape sensitivity model serves as an important tool for the Harlow Urban Expansion Project to link future planning with environmental and cultural features thus ensuring a sustainable pattern of development in the region.
Data Management
Functioning as a data-brokerage for the project, information from individual consultants was collected and formatted by L – P : Archaeology according to a common set of criteria.
The dynamic nature of the GIS allows an easy interchange between different factors, helping the project team to better view and understand building restrictions.
