Hanover Street, Liverpool
Sep 21, 2010 by Blair Poole
L – P : Archaeology’s Buildings Department were commissioned to undertake a level III historic building survey of 11-13 Hanover Street by Ethel Austin Investment Properties. Whilst the facade of the building would be retained, a planning condition required the survey and recording of historic material impacted by the proposed internal alterations and partial demolition and rebuilding of the structure.
An important part of Liverpool’s heritage, Hanover Street was part of the early expansion of Liverpool surrounding the Old Dock. ‘Hanover Galleries’ at numbers 11-13, was constructed in 1884 for Legg Brothers, a firm of milliners, and later converted into an art gallery. The buildings usage reflects societal change within the city during the late 19th century when merchants warehouses and their dwellings were transformed into city offices and cultural spaces.
L – P : Archaeology have a vast amount of experience with historic buildings of this period and carried out the survey to the highest standard, enabling the construction works to go ahead unhindered. The renovated building now houses a retail outlet and compliments the modern regeneration of Liverpool.
