Grange City Hotel

May 12, 2006 by Guy Hunt

This luxury hotel development in the heart of the city of London contains one of the best preserved stretches of the Roman and Medieval city wall of London. The wall is a scheduled monument (SM). In addition, the site covered a large area of buried archaeology.

L – P : Archaeology secured scheduled monument consent for the new hotel development allowing the hotel to create a new public space in front of the wall. The hotel’s bars overlook the wall, which forms a stunning backdrop.

The wall was enhanced by sensitive restoration works which included removal of damaging weeds, cleaning and a new lighting scheme for the monument.
Buried archaeology on the site was dealt with by a mix of preservation beneath the building and by a large scale urban excavation. The excavations were carried out whilst working very closely with the construction contractor, so that archaeology did not stand to delay this prestigious new development in one of the worlds most highly valued areas of land.

L – P have gone on to work on several other major new developments with the same client after this successful outcome.
