Ancient City of Chersonesos, Ukraine
Aug 02, 2006 by Stuart Eve
L – P have been involved for nearly 4 years with the ongoing research project being undertaken by a collaboration between the Institute of Classical Archaeology, University of Texas at Austin (ICA) and the National Tauric Preserve of Chersonesos (NPTC) at the Ancient City and Chora of Chersonesos, Crimea, Ukraine.
The Greek, Roman and Byzantine city has been almost continually excavated since the end of the 19th century and therefore is an extremely rich resource for archaeological research. L- P have helped to develop a ground-breaking new conservation recording and monitoring system to aid in the production of a much-needed conservation management plan to maintain and protect the acres of standing structures. The conservation management plan has been produced to aid in the eventual application to UNESCO for World Heritage status. This research has been published in the Conservation and Management of Archaeolgical Sites journal (Cleere, Trelogan and Eve 2006).
We have also been involved in the design and implementation of the excavation recording system, which has been used during excavations of a quarter in the southern part of the Byzantine City. We are currently incorporating the raw data into the ARK format to act as the online publication partner to the forthcoming paper publication.
