Albert Mill

Jul 02, 2008 by Claire Statter

Albert Mill was one of the few remaining silk mills in the Manchester area. Originally dating to the early 19th century, the mill is an important part of the textile heritage of Salford and the North-West. A new development of 34 apartments and 2 commercial units has retained the frontage of the old mill.

The existing building was a locally listed mill close to a conservation area, as such the local authority deemed that a level II/III RCHME building survey be carried out on the site prior to demolition.

L – P : Archaeology carried out a comprehensive building survey to fulfil the planning condition. This involved a photographic record of the interior and exterior, along with analysis of the building plan, form, fabric, function and phases of construction. An account of all the fixtures and fittings relating to the industrial past of the building was also made.

The resulting report, setting out the history of the building and its phases of construction, showed that the majority of the original building (dating to before 1831) had since been demolished and rebuilt.
